This 10-day holiday-tour is in Puglia, the stiletto heel on a map of Italy: a diverse, long, narrow region between the Ionian and Adriatic seas, with a wide varety of architecture, language, food and wine. The region offers travellers fabulous scenery along the coast with white Greek-inspired villages, many historical towers protecting from earlier invaders, very rocky terrain, many walled masserie - originally built to protect groups of owners, workers and their animals from brigands, thousands of very old olive trees, and the unique to Puglia magical trulli residences which are protected by law - some in the original grey stone, others brilliantly white-washed - all with similar coned roofs, some of which remain plain, others have a variety of painted insignias. Reminiscent of secret codes! Our tour is designed to help you discover the "real" Puglia, not only the more famous sites. From start to finish of our tour, everything is included - there's no need for you to spend an extra Euro on this trip! Immerse, indulge, Imbibe, Revive!
Lecce, the capital of Puglia, is sometimes called the "Florence of the South", referring to its prominent art.... as the Renaissance is to Florence, so is Baroque to Lecce. Lecce is over 2000 years old and has a long affinity with with Greek culture. We'll spend 2 nights here, and will explore the city and surrounding areas, including Cerrate, Otranto, Gallipoli (yes, there is such a place in Italy!) The history and background of the people in this region is quite different to that of Italians from the centre and north of Italy: battles from the 1400s involving the Turkish/Otoman fleet are not forgotten in Otranto. We'll show you why!
When we move out to the country side, you'll enjoy living in a comfortable (internally modernised) trullo, and we'll take day and half day trips to discover more of the central and northern part of this region. Alberobello, centre of the trulli houses, is just one of the towns we'll visit that is on the UNESCO world heritage listing: we'll also spend time in unique octagonal 1200s Castel del Monte, and in Locorotondo, Cisternino, Martina Franca, Putignano, and coastal relaxed Trani, with its battered fishermen's boats alongside some more luxurious yachts.
Of course we'll enjoy local fresh food meals, and drink some excellent local wines - including Primitivo, Nero di Troia and Negroamaro.
Cost of Tour E 2011 "Trulli Puglia: Food Wine Lecce & Trulli Cones" $AUD6999 per person, twin share. Limited single accommodation is available at a supplement of $AUD898 .
